Boys Adrift

If you are going to have sons, have sons already, or have daughters who are going to marry, you must read or at least skim through this book.

Yes, it's written from a worldly world-view, and yes the author's theology is bad, and yes, he misses the mark in several child-rearing areas.

However, he also gets a lot of things RIGHT, and those surprising nuggets are well worth wading through the things he misses.  The "Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men" addressed in the book include . . .

Changes at School ~ well, duh!

Video Games ~ Did you know that they have the same impact on the brain (and long-term effect) as p0rn?

Medications for ADHD ~ They may cover up symptoms in the child now, but results in suppressing the chemistry that drives motivation in adulthood.

Endocrine Disruptors ~ You'd be amazed to read about what low-level plastics/chemical exposure does.

Revenge of the Forsaken Gods ~ Big news here - it's better to learn how to be a man from another man.

I'm not sure that you have to purchase the book, get it from your local library first.  A one-time read through may be all you need.

  1. Oooo, I'm putting that on my list. Love your comment that "it's better to learn to be a man, from a man". I was talking with a friend recently about how I want to find ways for my older boys to spend more time with godly MEN. She called me a few days later with a "great opportunity" - the youth leader at her Willow-creek-esque church was starting a small group (Bible study???) for teen guys.

Uh... in a word, NO. And the youth leader is what... twenty something? He's an overgrown adolescent who dresses like all the other teens at the skateboard park. Not exactly the role model I'm looking for!

    Godly MEN! MEN!
