Blogging Through the Gospels Day 1

I ran into this over at Mom's Toolbox, couldn't resist, so here I go!

Matthew 1

Scripture ~ Matthew 1:1-16
. . . And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Observation ~ The 'line', the generations to Christ, is built via Joseph.  He didn't conceive Jesus, he didn't carry the pregnancy of Jesus, he didn't give birth to Jesus.  We hear very little about this man who is chosen to be the adoptive earthly father of our Saviour.  Yet his genealogy becomes that of Christ.

Application ~ Biology matters not.  An adoptive father can pass along his genealogy.  What a precious gift!

Prayer ~ Father, Thank you, Lord, for allowing such a gift, for paving the way for adoptive parents everywhere.  Let us never overlook the grace and mercy behind your every good and perfect gift.

Scripture ~ Matthew 1:18-25 ~ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Observation ~ There is no mention of Joseph arguing the news brought by the angel, or having some dramatic episode.  He didn't battle for days over what his family and friends would say or think.  Such an enormous social stigma and yet he obeyed.  And not just obedience, but immediate obedience.  Then on top of that he abstained from marital relations with Mary until after Jesus was born.  A young man, pure, and married, yet abstaining for months!

Application ~ Obedience, obedience, and obedience.  What does the Lord think rather than what would so and so think.  Sacrifice, less of me, more of Him.

Prayer ~ Father, strengthen me that I may follow this amazing example of godly obedience, for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.  (Gal 1:10)
